# Rate Plans

Rate plans let you charge based on the subscriber's consumption of licensing models.

Commerce Engine offers the ability to create license-based rate plans where customers prepay for a license quantity. These plans provide your customers with the option to buy individual licenses, or seats, for prices defined in your rate plan. With this type of plan, you can establish pricing tiers based on the number of licenses purchased, making it easy to offer volume discounts.

Rate plans can vary based on units or tiers. For example, you may offer a cloud-based productivity software subscription for small businesses that is based on license quantity with pricing tiers. Rate plans also allow you to define a not-to-exceed amount, or define minimum quantity per month charges.
